Tire Stewardship Manitoba (TSM) is a not-for-profit organization incorporated under the laws of Manitoba. It aims to develop, promote, implement, operate and monitor a scrap tire diversion program for the Province of Manitoba.
The Manitoba Government requested the tire industry to establish an Industry Funding Organization (IFO) based on a new Draft Regulation under the Waste Reduction and Prevention (WRAP) act. The industry has responded positively by: establishing a not-for-profit corporation (Tire Stewardship Manitoba); developing a Backgrounder and Discussion Paper; holding industry consultations, and has completed the process of developing a Business Plan.
The new Regulation has been approved as anticipated, the new IFO had completed a Draft Business Plan and then released it for industry stakeholder review and input. Following this, the plan was forwarded to Green Manitoba and the Conservation Ministry where it was posted for any additional comments. TSM has had its tire product stewardship program (the Plan), approved by Manitoba Conservation in accordance with The Tire Stewardship Regulation2006. TSM became effective April 1, 2008.
The new IFO's intent is to ensure a level playing field exists for all industry stakeholders. This includes tire manufacturers, tire importers, tire retailers, haulers and processors. The primary goal of this programme is to protect the environment in Manitoba. This will be accomplished in the most cost-effective method possible. |
